We can be a broken record when it comes to touting the benefits of buying seasonally from local farmers, but in the thick of the growing season with so many wonderful local produce items at our fingertips, how can we not? The benefits to buying local are multifold, one being that you can eat with peace of mind knowing that the food is grown with care and an attentiveness to health that doesn’t exist in supermarkets on a national or global scale. Your fresh head of lettuce from the farmers’ market is a safer purchase, especially in light of recent parasitic findings and it’s questionable origins found in our food. At the farmers’ market, you can converse directly with the farmers who can tell you all about how and why they grow food the way they do. Reminder to all to wash your hands before handling food, folks!
So what’s in season here in PA in July, you ask? Let this infographic below give you a rundown!
We also have PA Produce Guides from Penn State Extension available at all of our Info Booths that have helpful nutritional information about every produce item!
