What is POP?
The Power of Produce (POP) Club is a farmers market-based children’s program, that offers children the opportunity to learn about seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables through fun, educational activities. Our weekly activities range from cooking demonstrations to farmers market scavenger hunts, providing nutrition, food, agriculture, and exercise education. Participants are rewarded for each activity by receiving vouchers to spend at the market. This empowers kids by offering them authority to select and buy their own food from farmers and local vendors at the market.
Meet Our Coordinator
Hi, I’m Jenna Galvin―this year’s POP Club coordinator! I am a sophomore at Pace University in lower Manhattan studying Environmental Studies and Environmental Art & Social Change; but most importantly, Easton is my home. Growing up as a resident of Easton and graduating from Wilson Area High School, my passion for our community is ever growing. Working with the POP Club and helping in Easton’s Community Gardens & Compost program offers me the opportunity to better our city in a multitude of different ways, and I am so excited to see what this season will bring!
This Season’s Kickoff Events
Kicking off the program on June 1st, we did a Produce Picture Journaling activity that taught kids to creatively track their daily fruits and vegetables. We offered the kids fresh, organic carrots and red beets from Salvaterra’s Gardens to log into their journals. This activity provided a jump start to a new, healthy practice the kids could carry home with their own personalized Produce Journal.
On Strawberry Day, June 8th, the POP Club had a special event: Hands-On Strawberry Salsa with Chef Ada Chandler. In this activity, the kids received a worksheet where they identified, labeled, and colored the ingredients in Chef Ada’s Sweet & Sassy Strawberry Salsa, and then got to try a sample paired with Chef Ada’s churro chips!
