Blue Blaze Farm 2010 CSA

The Blue Blaze Farm family realizes that many of you frequent the Easton Farmers' Market because you want fresh and healthy foods, and want to know where your food is coming from and how it got there.  And why not?  Afterall, you are what you eat.

Not everyone has the time, energy, patience and know-how to grow these fresh, healthy foods, so that's where we come in. This year, we are offering you your very own farm!
Yes, our farm can be your farm!

We consider Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to be one answer to the complex issues we face today regarding healthy food. So this year, we're very excited to invite you to become directly involved with our farm!  The CSA method is an excellent means to create stronger connections between the farmers, the food, and you.

What can you expect from our CSA?

Blue Blaze Farm CSA offers the following benefits:

A Share of the Farm

  • A Monthly Newsletter
    • Recipes, Cooking & Storage Tips
    • Highlight benefits of a specific crop
    • Features on local producers that we support
    • And, what's happening on your farm!
  • Weekly selection of our Certified Naturally Grown Produce (CNG) *
Please see the Estimated Crop Calendar for the specific crops you will receive

* CNG is a grassroots effort with Certification Standards that are based on the highest principles and ideals of organic farming.  To learn more about this subject you can visit www.naturallygrown.org .

About Blue Blaze Farm

Blue Blaze Farm, established in 2007, is owned and operated by Nature lovers, Eric and Melody Shubert. We're located in Danielsville, PA near the Blue Mountain Ski Area.  And, we're just a hop, skip, and a jump from the Appalachian Trail (AT). As a matter of fact, you can see the Trail from just about anywhere on the property when looking North.

While we both love to hit a trail for a week in the woods or even a day hike; this view is a nostalgic plus for Eric, who thru-hiked the AT in ‘95 and followed its trail guide of trees marked with white blazes from Georgia to Maine . It took him just
about 6 months and he made sure to enjoy every inch of the Earth, even occasionally taking the off-shoot trails notably marked with blue blazes – thus, the name Blue Blaze Farm.

Eric's AT trail name was Road Runner and that's just how he works on the farm.  After several hiking trips through the backcountry of National Parks, Melody was issued the name Barely Moving and that's at just the pace she tends the farm. But, it's Eric's “get ‘er done” and “just do it” action and Melody's thoughts on “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of attention” that allow for the accomplishments of the farm.

However, the ideal of working with Nature is not something where we stand as opposites. This is a significant factor in our way of living and when it comes to running our farm. You can be assured that all our seeds are certified organic or purchased from a company that does not knowingly buy or sell ones that are genetically engineered. We control pests and disease by making sure our soil is balanced, inter-planting crops, crop rotation and even hand picking unwanted garden occupants.  If spraying does become necessary, you won't find us using anything that you could not concoct in your kitchen.  We've discovered a mixture of ingredients like water, baking soda and biodegradable dish soap do wonders for the occasional disease like powdery mildew; and that determined pests don't care for our cayenne pepper or garlic water spray.  And, the larger critters really don't enjoy the sting of the electric fence or the sound of a BB gun.

Yes, we're in the early stages of realizing our dreams and responsibilities as non-certified organic farmers.  But, it is our mission to practice, support and encourage sustainability by providing year-round nourishment via methods that uphold Nature's process, utilize local resources, and promote community togetherness.  We plan to embrace and savor the fruits and labors of our journey and hope for you to join us along the way!

See you at the market!

The Happy Farmers,
Eric and Melody
